The yacht of the Dutch queen.

The Lemster aak was a fishing ship of the Zuyder Zee and named after the place of its origin, Lemmer. This type was first built in the second half of the 19th century in the shipyard of De Boer at Lemmer. Originally it was build from wood but around 1900 iron was also used. It is a round shaped vessel, with a bow that is higher and sharper than that of tjalk. The vessel has a strong resemblance to the boyer. Their typically graceful, rounded lines come from Friesland. From the Zuyder Zee comes the high bow, making it suitable for work as a fishing ship in large waters. The Lemster aak became especially famous when in 1957 a yacht of this type was built for princess Beatrix. Its popularity as a yacht type has continued to grow.
