A ship from long ago

A sketch in an old book gave rise to the construction of a model of the galjas “De Jonge Willem” It was completely built with estimated details. Dated the 19th of March 1819 a contract was made in the city of Dordrecht for the foundation of a shipping company for this ship with 4 participants, among them Mr. Poppe Stratingh who was captain from 1819 till 1823. Later captains were Mr. Steven Albertusz van Delden from 1823 till 1824 and Mr. Johannes Hartwijk from 1824 till 1829. The captainsflag at the mizzenmast from the “Rotterdamse Maatschappij tot Nut van der Zeevaart” (Rotterdam Society for the Benefit of the Navigation) with number R.75 is from Mr. van Delden. It seemes that the former name of the ship was “Vrouw Sjuwke” and that she was built in a Scandinavian yard. Exactly where this ship was built and what happened to her, is lost in history. However the Foundation Maritime History Databank (www.marhisdata.nl) , who also provided the above information, fights for the rescue from oblivion of our merchant ships from that period. For the time being we have not much more than just an old sketch from a certain Mr. J. Schouman who. perhaps caught by just a nice ship, took his sketchbook and perpetuated that ship. Certainly he never could image that 200 years later this caused the rise of a model of that same ship.
