Little grey devils

The Dutch coastal trade missed the steam era. Sailing ships became an engine and in the twenties they started to build motor ships. These first coasters were very small and to be on the safe side they also carried some sails to reach a port in case of need. The shipyard Koster and Sons, in Groningen, built a very succesfull series of these coasters. The “DRITTURA” was one of them. The ship was built in 1928 and reconstructed as a sailingship for the Dutch Braun Fleet. She is still sailing under the name “STORE BAELT”. Obliged by the crisis in the thirties many of these new coasters were forced to start coastal trade in the United Kingdom. Because of their modern design and the low costs as a result of working with their own family, their competition reached such an extend that the English started to speak from the little grey devils.
