Steambicycle

For centuries sailing ships carried out the floating net method of herring fishery. In 1896 the steam engine made his entrance in this fishery. The machines of 160 up to 250 HP were a considerable improvement. There had been around 60 steamers in Vlaardingen, when the driftingfishery came to an end in 1964. The locals usually called these drifters “stoomfietsen” (= steam bicycles). Steam bicycles do not exist anymore and the fishery has disappeared from Vlaardingen. Only in the fishery museum at the Westhavenkade have they kept the memory on the once flourishing fishery alive. The fisherymuseum at Vlaardingen and the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam gave their very best assistance by the realization of this unique model of a steambicyle.
